Protecting capital, growing value and acting intergenerationally

Business, People

As part of Quayside’s 2026 Annual Report, outgoing Board Chair Mark Wynne reflects on the role Quayside plays in protecting and growing the Bay of Plenty’s intergenerational wealth.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Mark discusses how Quayside balances today’s opportunities with the long-term responsibility of managing assets on behalf of current and future generations.

Mark shares his perspective on the importance of diversification, independence and how a broader investment base can strengthen resilience while supporting Quayside’s role in providing a stable distribution to Council in perpetuity.

He also reflects on governance, costs, stakeholder relationships and the disciplined decision-making required to ensure the fund continues to deliver value for the Bay of Plenty over time.

After serving as Chair since 2022, this interview serves as one of Mark’s parting contributions in the role. From 1 October 2026, Mike Allen will step into the role of Quayside Board Chair, continuing the organisation’s focus on growing the Bay of Plenty’s intergenerational fund.
