A route less well travelled but we’re happy he’s here – meet Ross Thornton, our Investment Analyst!

People

Our Investment Analyst, Ross, is Quayside’s most recent recruit.  He is a product of Pohangina and the Kapiti Coast in his early years before an 18-month stint in Indonesia during his senior school years when his family moved for his father’s role working for the UN. It was this brief time in Asia that has formed how Ross looks at the world.

Home schooled through the ACE education system through to Year 13, Ross spent a couple of gap years working in hospitality before heading to the University of Auckland where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance & Economics and a Master of Commerce in Finance (First Class Honours).

A keen rower, Ross represented the University in the Men’s 4 and 8 squads at the Aon New Zealand University Rowing Championships and was an active member of the UoA Investment and Management Consulting Clubs. These competitive tendencies are put to good test at Quayside where we debate most subjects in the office.

Ross continued to work during his studies, securing a part time role at NZ company Bluerock (a food import and distribution company) applying his analytical mind to the finance and warehouse operations. A “late bloomer” to use his own description, Ross was pretty set on thinking outside the square when it came to securing his first role on completion of studies. He has a real passion for private equity, corporate transactions, and investment management; he has dabbled in virtual economies and is an avid reader online of a wide and diverse range of news and information.

The addition of Ross’ electronica and metal music playlist only adds to the eclectic tastes of our diverse investment team at Quayside and we have welcomed his skillset, not to mention his sense of humour, as we navigate what is a fast-moving investment and economic environment.

Ross is driven to succeed, not only within his work environment but also long term by giving back.   Those early days in Indonesia where he saw extreme poverty has inspired him to give back through education – providing opportunities for rangatahi to be educated so that poverty ends with that generation.

Quayside’s long held vision of intergenerational wealth aligns very well with Ross’ personal vision.  Our best stories are ahead of us.
