It’s been a hot minute since Michael joined the Quayside team late last year, so it’s high time we give you a little more insight into our GM Property.
Raised in the small Waikato town of Horotiu, on the outskirts of Hamilton, Michael grew up on the family dairy with his parents and brother.
A Hamilton Boys lad, after finishing secondary school he embarked on a move to Auckland undertake a Bachelor of Property at the University of Auckland, where he first got a taste for the world of Valuing.
His early working years were spent with Colliers initially, then five years practising as a junior Valuer at Attewell Gerbich Havill, doing his registration whilst commuting between Auckland and Hamilton.
After nine years in Valuation, he decided it was time to transition from reporting on numbers to the other side of the fence, deploying capital, where he moved to Stride Property Group and spent five years, before a short stint in Australia.
When Todd Corporation came knocking, the allure of home and working for a company that had a wide portfolio sealed the deal, bringing Michael back to Auckland for several years, before moving to the Urban Regeneration CCO, Eke Panuku Development Auckland as their Senior Development Manager.
When he’s not suited and booted, Michael enjoys mountain biking, skiing, swimming and running in his spare time – having run the Queenstown half marathon late last year.
Michael speaks proudly of his wife Adele, a successful optometrist in her own right and their two girls Ava, nine, and Sienna, seven. Weekends with the family consist of going to the movie theatre, skiing, social events and travelling to see family in the South Island.
When asked what three items he’d take to a desert island, Michael quips – “my wife, a deck chair and a bottle of champagne”. Nice to see he has his priorities right with his wife and pop at the top of the list.
Michael brings a touch of class to the typically laid-back beachside Bay of Plenty. He has hit the ground running, with several meaty workstreams well underway, alongside investments into Tauranga Crossing, CBD Hamilton Street joint venture and the Rangiuru Business Park activities ramping up across Summer. Michael brings a positive attitude, an open mind and a willingness to try new things – a perfect attitude for this adaptive and ever-evolving environment.
